Sasquatch women own second half, beat Highline
Cali Moscrip and Sarah Melvin scored second-half goals and the Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch (3-0-1) turned back the Highline Thunderbirds 3-1 in nonconference women’s soccer action at Spokane Falls on Tuesday.
Alysha Overland staked CCS to a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute.
Highline (2-2-1) knotted the score 2 minutes before halftime.
Moscrip gave the Sasquatch the lead for good in the 58th minute. Kelsi Walker had assists on the first two goals. Overland picked up an assist on Melvin’s netter.
• FC Spokane defeated the CC Spokane Sasquatch men 3-2 in an exhibition match at SFCC.
Jared Davis scored in the 19th minute and Ivan Adame added a goal in the 56th minute for the Sasquatch (2-1-1).
Baseball
Gonzaga baseball coach Mark Machtolf announced that volunteer assistant coach Brandon Harmon has been elevated to the position of assistant coach.
Harmon will assume the duties of the Zags’ pitching coach, taking over from former assistant coach Steve Bennett. Bennett accepted the role of pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Nevada over the summer.
Harmon had served as volunteer assistant for the last three years. He primarily worked with the Bulldog catchers and outfielders.
Junior hockey
Three current Spokane Chiefs players are expected to participate in National Hockey League camps later this week. Forward Adam Helewka will attend San Jose Sharks camp, defenseman Jason Fram return to Calgary Flames camp and defenseman Evan Fiala will head to Florida Panthers camp.
Helewka was drafted by the Sharks in the fourth round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft this past summer after a 44-goal, 87-point 2014-15 campaign with the Chiefs.
Fram, the Chiefs’ 2014-15 team captain and second-leading scorer with nine goals and 62 points, returns to Calgary Flames camp as an undrafted invitee for the second year.
Fiala earned an invitation to Florida Panthers rookie development camp earlier this summer. All three players will miss the Chiefs’ two preseason games in Kennewick this week. Spokane will face Portland on Thursday and Red Deer on Saturday.
Prep soccer
The Sandpoint Bulldogs and Lakeland Hawks boys settled for a wild 4-4 draw in Inland Empire League 4A play in Lakeland.
Amos Crossingham and Dawson Mulder had goals in the first 5 minutes to give Sandpoint a 2-0 lead.
But Juho Reinman scored two of Lakeland’s four goals in an 18-minute span to give the Hawks a 4-2 lead.
Mulder scored on a header with 8 minutes left to pull Sandpoint within a goal and Charlie Crane notched the equalizer for the Bulldogs in the final minute.
• Avery Summers scored four goals and the Priest River Spartans rallied past the Kellogg Wildcats 4-3 in Intermountain League girls play in Kellogg.
• Coeur d’Alene Charter’s girls used an own goal and scores from eight different players to breeze to a 9-0 win over visiting St. Maries in the Central Idaho League.
