Ruins’ new theme menus change weekly

Ruins is switching things up.

That’s the norm at the 1930s-style diner known for its variation and small plates since opening just over a year ago.

But now that variety is being served in themed menus that chef Tony Brown plans to run for a week at a time for 52 weeks.

“I wanted to challenge myself,” said Brown, who started the project in August with a week of vegan offerings, followed by a Thai-inspired menu, then Russian.

“They say there’s no such thing as ‘American’ food, and we’re all pulling ideas from somewhere,” Brown said. “I guess I’m kind of searching for new flavors and ideas.”

Brown said he plans to hit some of the more obvious themes – Italian, French – but he’s “also going to go a little crazy. I’d like to do a Viking Christmas week around the holidays. I’d love to do upscale cafeteria food. I’m also thinking of re-creating other restaurants’ menus.”

Ruins is at 825 N. Monroe St. Call (509) 443-5606. On Facebook: www.facebook.com/ ruins.spokane.
