Top 25 football roundup: No. 6 Auburn needs late TD, OT to edge Jacksonville State

Peyton Barber ran 4 yards for a touchdown on No. 6 Auburn’s first possession in overtime and the Tigers dodged a major upset with a 27-20 win over FCS power Jacksonville State.

Melvin Ray’s 10-yard catch in the right corner of the end zone with less than 1 minute remaining in regulation saved Auburn from a stunning loss that would have been among the biggest upsets in college football.

Troymaine Pope’s 5-yard touchdown run with less than 6 minutes remaining gave Jacksonville State a 20-13 lead.

(1) Ohio State 38, Hawaii 0: Ezekiel Elliott scored three touchdowns on short runs as the Buckeyes started slowly but scored a flurry of points late in a win over the Warriors in Columbus, Ohio.

Elliott scored on 1- and 3-yard runs in the first half, and added a 1-yard touchdown with about 9 minutes left for a 24-0 lead.

No. 2 Alabama 37, Middle Tenn. 10: Jake Coker passed for 214 yards in the first half and Derrick Henry ran for three touchdowns to lead the Crimson Tide to victory over the Blue Raiders in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Henry has three TDs in each of Alabama’s first two games.

(3) TCU 70, Stephen F. Austin 7: Trevone Boykin threw for 285 yards and four touchdowns in a little more than a half, Aaron Green ran for two scores and the Horned Frogs beat the lower-division Lumberjacks in Fort Worth, Texas.

TCU won its 14th straight home opener under coach Gary Patterson.

(4) Baylor 66, Lamar 31: Corey Coleman had a Baylor-record four touchdown catches, and the Bears had 785 total yards in a victory over the FCS’ Cardinals in Waco, Texas.

(9) Notre Dame 34, Virginia 27: Backup quarterback DeShone Kizer threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Will Fuller with 12 seconds left and the Fighting Irish beat the Cavaliers in a thrilling finish in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Notre Dame, which had lost the lead when Virginia scored with 1:54 remaining, won despite quarterback Malik Zaire going down with a season-ending ankle injury.

(10) Georgia 31, Vanderbilt 14: Nick Chubb ran for 189 yards, Isaiah McKenzie returned a punt 77 yards for a touchdown, and the Bulldogs beat the Commodores in Nashville, Tennessee, in the Southeastern Conference opener for both teams.

(11) Florida State 34, South Florida 14: Dalvin Cook had 266 yards on 30 carries, the second-best rushing game in school history, and three touchdowns as the Seminoles held off the Bulls in Tallahassee, Florida.

Greg Allen has the FSU record with 322 yards against Western Carolina in 1981.

(14) LSU 21, No. 25 Mississippi State 19: Leonard Fournette ran for 159 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Tigers over the Bulldogs in Starkville, Mississippi.

MSU’s Devon Bell missed a 52-yard field goal with no time remaining that would have won the game, which was the SEC opener for both teams.

(15) Georgia Tech 65, Tulane 10: Justin Thomas passed for two touchdowns and ran for another as the Yellow Jackets romped to another dominating win, beating the lowly Green Wave in Atlanta.

Tulane has been outscored 102-17 this season.

(16) Texas A&M 56, Ball State 23: Kyle Allen threw for 126 yards and three touchdowns in the first half and the Aggies rolled to victory over the Cardinals in College Station, Texas.

(17) Mississippi 73, Fresno State 21: Chad Kelly threw for 346 yards and four touchdowns and Quincy Adeboyejo caught three touchdown passes to lead the Rebels past the Bulldogs in Oxford, Mississippi.

Ole Miss finished with 607 total yards.

Toledo 16, (18) Arkansas 12: Phillip Ely threw for 237 yards and the Rockets defense rattled the Razorbacks into a number of mistakes (one turnover, nine penalties) in an upset in Little Rock, Arkansas.

(19) Oklahoma 31, (23) Tennessee 24 (2OT): Baker Mayfield threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Sterling Shepard in double overtime and the Sooners rallied from a 17-point deficit in a victory over the Volunteers in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Zack Sanchez clinched OU’s victory by picking off a pass in Tennessee’s second overtime possession.
