Ko LPGA’s youngest major champ

Golf: Lydia Ko won the Evian Championship in Evian-Les-Bains, France, on Sunday to become the youngest major champion in LPGA Tour history.

The South Korean-born New Zealander closed with an 8-under 63 for a six-stroke victory over Lexi Thompson at the final major of the season.

Ko is 18 years, 4 months, 20 days. She broke the record set by American Morgan Pressel at 18 years, 10 months, 9 days in the 2007 Kraft Nabisco Championship.

• Britain and Ireland win Walker Cup: Britain and Ireland won the Walker Cup with its highest-points total, beating the United States 16 1/2-9 1/2 at Royal Lytham and St Annes in England.

Europe has won seven of the last 14 matches to cut the Americans’ series lead to 35-9-1 in the biennial amateur event.

Storm loses in their season finale

WNBA: Dearica Hamby scored 15 points and Samantha Logic hit a pair of free throws with 1:10 left to help the San Antonio Stars win for the first time on the road this year, 59-58 over the Seattle Storm in both teams’ season finale.

Hamby converted a three-point play and Danielle Adams hit a 3-pointer to give San Antonio a 57-56 lead with 1:51 left.

Quanitra Hollingsworth put the Storm back on top 21 seconds later, but Logic’s free throws gave the Stars the lead for good.

Seattle missed all four of its shots and committed a turnover in the final 57 seconds.

Sophia Young-Malcolm, San Antonio’s career scoring leader with 4,319 points, scored had eight points in her final game.

Delle Donne scoring champ but Sky lose: Kelsey Bone scored a career-high 31 points and the Connecticut Sun ended their season with an 86-75 victory over the Chicago Sky in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Chicago’s Elena Delle Donne had four 3-pointers and finished with 28 points to take the WNBA scoring title at 23.4 points per game. She also became the sixth player in league history to make over 200 free throws in a season with 207.

Chicago, the No. 2 seed out of the Eastern Conference, will open the first round of the playoffs at home Thursday night against third seed Indiana.

Fever beat Liberty: Shavonte Zellous scored 11 of her season-high 22 points in the final five minutes to help the Indiana Fever beat the New York Liberty in Indianapolis.

New York will host Washington on Friday in a playoff opener.

Mystics lose, are No. 4 seed: Angel McCoughtry scored 24 points and the Atlanta Dream concluded their season with a 73-71 victory over Washington, making the Mystics the fourth seed in the playoffs.

Shock win final regular-season game in Tulsa: Rookie Brianna Kiesel scored a career-best 28 points to help the Shock beat Phoenix 91-87 in their final regular-season home game in Tulsa before the franchise moves to Dallas next year.

Tulsa’s fans will have at least one more chance to watch the team play. The Shock will play the Mercury in a home playoff game Saturday. This is the franchise’s first postseason berth and first winning season since it moved from Detroit before the 2010 season.

Hillsboro wins second straight NWL title

Baseball: Carlos Hernandez and three Hillsboro relievers held Tri-City to three hits and the Hops captured their second straight Northwest League championship with a 6-1 victory at Pasco to win the series 2-1.

UM, MSU athletes won’t get stipend

Colleges: Both Montana and Montana State have decided not to add cost of attendance stipends to the scholarships of their student athletes.

MSU athletic director Peter Fields says the idea remains open for future discussion but he says the university cannot afford to pay the federally set $3,390 per year per scholarship.

Montana athletic director Kent Haslam says the university also can’t afford the stipend without increasing revenue, which is now derived through student fees, donations, multimedia rights, institutional support or ticket sales.

The NCAA in January expanded the set of costs that schools across the country are allowed to cover.

Four schools that play football at the subdivision level have announced plans to increase aid for 2016-17, including the Big Sky’s North Dakota.

Italian Fabio Aru wins Spanish Vuelta

Cycling: Fabio Aru of Italy rode safely in an uneventful final stage to win the Spanish Vuelta on Sunday and clinch his first Grand Tour title.

The 25-year-old Italian had virtually secured the victory on Saturday after getting help from his Astana teammates to beat Tom Dumoulin and take the lead ahead of the flat final stage arriving in Madrid.

• Spanish police spot stolen $13,600 bicycle on sale: Spanish police say they’ve recovered a prized bicycle belonging to an international racing team taking part in the Spanish Vuelta cycling race after finding it on sale in a secondhand store for a ridiculously low price.

Officers in the Mediterranean port of Malaga recovered the specially-constructed cycle, seeing it marked at 120 euros ($136) when its exceptional technical characteristics should have placed its value at around 12,000 euros ($13,600), a statement says.

Ross teams with third partner for record win

Volleyball: April Ross became the first female player in AVP tour history to win titles with three partners in the same season, teaming with Lauren Fendrick to take the Kingston AVP Championships at Huntington Beach, California.

Ross and Fendrick beat Nicole Branagh and Jenny Kropp 21-19, 23-21 in the final.

Ross won the season-opening New Orleans Open with three-time Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings, then took the Seattle Open and Manhattan Beach Open in August with Jennifer Fopma after Walsh Jennings was sidelined by a shoulder injury.

In the men’s final, John Hyden and Tri Bourne beat Ryan Doherty and John Mayer 21-17, 23-25, 15-13 for their second tournament victory in two weeks. Hyden has 11 victories, and Bourne three.

U.S. beats Egypt to stay in first: The United States stayed in first place at 5-0 with a comfortable 25-20, 25-13, 25-21 win over Egypt at the men’s volleyball World Cup in Hiroshima, Japan.

Two berths for the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro are available in the 12-nation tournament that runs to Sept. 23.

Simpson wins her 4th Fifth Avenue Mile title

Miscellany: American Jenny Simpson won her fourth Fifth Avenue Mile title in New York, and Nick Willis of New Zealand took the men’s race for the third time.

It was the third straight victory for Simpson, the 2011 world champion in the 1,500 meters. She won in 4 minutes, 29 seconds to edge two-time winner Shannon Rowbury by 0.3 seconds.

Willis won in 3:54.8 to add to his 2008 and ‘13 titles.

Marquez first in Moto GP race: Defending champion Marc Marquez won Moto GP’s San Marino Grand Prix on a rain-soaked course in Misano Adriatico, Italy, as championship leader Valentino Rossi finished fifth and his closest rival Jorge Lorenzo crashed out.

Ogunode clocks 9.93 in Rieti: Signaling he could be a man to watch in the sprints next year, Nigerian-born Qatar runner Femi Ogunode comfortably won the 100 meters in 9.93 seconds at the Rieti (Italy) World Challenge meet.
