In brief: Some women, children rescued from Boko Haram
ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigeria’s army said Tuesday it had rescued at least a dozen kidnapped women and children held captive by the Islamic extremist group Boko Haram.
In a statement, military spokesman Col. Sani Kukasheka Usman said the group was rescued as the army cleared Boko Haram camps on Monday in northeastern Borno state.
Hundreds of hostages have been freed from Boko Haram captivity this year but none of the 219 girls abducted in April 2014 from a school in Chibok were among those rescued.
Comedian, former first lady top two in Guatemala’s presidential race
GUATEMALA CITY – Guatemala’s electoral tribunal has declared a television comedian and a former first lady the top two finishers in the Sept. 6 presidential vote.
The two will compete in the Oct. 25 runoff to be the next president of Guatemala.
Jimmy Morales finished first with about 24 percent of the vote, while Sandra Torres ended in a virtual tie with candidate Manuel Baldizon. Baldizon dropped out of the race Monday without requesting a recount.
Six more identified in attack on tourists
MEXICO CITY – Mexico’s Foreign Relations Department said Tuesday that embassy personnel in Egypt have identified six more bodies as those of Mexican citizens killed in air attack by Egyptian police and military forces.
The deaths of two Mexicans had earlier been confirmed, bringing the total number of Mexicans killed to eight.
Six other Mexicans were wounded in the attack.
Egyptian forces hunting militants in the country’s western desert mistakenly opened fire on several vehicles used by Mexican tourists, killing 12 people on Sunday. The other dead are believed to be Egyptians.
