Globetrotting ‘Furious 7’ roars onto home screens

What’s new for home viewing on video-on-demand and Netflix, Amazon Prime and other streaming services.

Pay-Per-View / Video-On-Demand

Furious 7finds the “Fast and Furious” action franchise as wildly improbable and furiously entertaining as ever. This one sends Vin Diesel and Paul Walker (who died before production had ended) around the world to take on international gangsters, a Somali terrorist, and a vengeful Jason Statham, all from behind the wheel of a car. Dwayne Johnson and Kurt Russell co-star. The “extended version” on VOD is about two minutes longer than the theatrical version. PG-13 for violence, action, mayhem and suggestive language. Also on Blu-ray and DVD.

Disney’s live action remake of their classic animated fairy tale Cinderella,” starring Lily James (of “Downton Abbey”) as Cinderella and Cate Blanchett as her stepmother, has a family friendly PG rating. Also on Blu-ray and DVD.

Time Out of Mind,” the acclaimed drama with Richard Gere as a homeless man on the streets of New York, arrives on Cable On Demand as it expands in theaters (unrated, mature audiences).

Tina Fey narrates the nature documentary Monkey Kingdom(Rated G).

Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom (2012) is a sweet and playful tale of adolescent misfits turned romantic runaways and the dysfunctional adults who are nudged into becoming better parents. Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Edward Norton and Bruce Willis star. PG-13 for sexual situations and smoking.

Keith Richards: Under the Influence,” the latest Netflix original documentary, profiles the Rolling Stones guitarist, songwriter, and rock legend in his 70s.

Streaming TV: The Mysteries of Laura: Season 1 stars Debra Messing as a single mom who solves crimes while raising rambunctious twin boys. There’s also the hipster comedy spoof Portlandia: Season 5,” Call the Midwife: Series 4from Britain, and Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries: Series 3 from Australia.

Amazon Prime Video

Men, Women and Children (2012), directed by Jason Reitman, looks at personal disconnection in age of social media, with Jennifer Garner, Adam Sandler, and Rosemarie DeWitt. R for language and sexual content. It’s also on Netflix.

Alps(2011), from Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos, is an offbeat story about a secret society that helps grieving people by posing as a recently deceased member of a mourning family.

Hulu Plus

The Mindy Project: Season 4premieres exclusively on Hulu, which picked up Mindy Kaling’s sitcom after Fox canceled it. The new season kicks off with Mindy on the verge of motherhood. New episodes arrive every Tuesday.

HBO Now

Will Ferrell plays 10 positions for 10 different Major League Baseball teams in one day during basic training. The comic documentary Ferrell Takes the Fieldchronicles the stunt, a fundraiser for Cancer for College.
