NFL notes: Dallas Cowboys acquire QB Matt Cassel

Matt Cassel is headed to Dallas in a trade as the Cowboys try to bolster their depth at QB while Tony Romo is sidelined at least seven games because of a broken left collarbone.

The Cowboys acquired Cassel from Buffalo on Tuesday, sending a fifth-round pick in 2017 to the Bills.

Both teams announced the trade, and a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press what Buffalo received in return because the round of the pick wasn’t disclosed.

Brandon Weeden is expected to start Sunday at home against Arizona (2-0), but Cassel is a veteran with far more experience than the fourth-year pro.

Cassel has 71 starts in 90 games over 11 seasons, not counting the opener this year when he took the first snap for the Bills with Tyrod Taylor lined up at receiver.

The Cowboys traded for the 33-year-old Cassel a few hours after putting Romo on the injured list with a designation to return.

Dallas (2-0) also put DT Terrell McClain on season-ending injured reserve with a toe injury sustained last weekend against the Eagles.

Decker has sprained knee but may play

New York Jets WR Eric Decker has a sprained knee, although coach Todd Bowles is “hopeful” he might be healthy enough to play the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.

An MRI on Tuesday revealed the sprain as the receiver avoided a potentially serious injury. Decker said after the Jets’ 20-7 victory over the Indianapolis Colts on Monday that doctors thought his posterior cruciate ligament was affected.

Decker had eight catches for 97 yards and a touchdown before leaving the game in the second half.

Bowles says Decker is day to day, and the Jets will determine later in the week if he can play Sunday.

Redskins’ Spaight put on injured reserve

Washington Redskins rookie linebacker Martrell Spaight is heading to season-ending injured reserve.

The move allows the Redskins to reinstate CB Chris Culliver to the active roster ahead of Thursday’s game against the Giants.

Around the league

The Cardinals released RB Kerwynn Williams and made three practice-squad moves. Williams was elevated from the practice squad to the active roster last week after an injury sidelined Andre Ellington. Ellington remains out, leaving the Cardinals with three running backs – Chris Johnson, rookie David Johnson and Stephan Taylor. … The Bears elevated QB David Fales from the practice squad. Fales figures to back up Jimmy Clausen.
