10 Under $10: Entertainment on a budget

Sharma Shields’ debut novel “The Sasquatch Hunter’s Almanac,” has won the 2016 Washington State Book Award for fiction.

1. The Poem, The Novel and the Wilderness 1:30 p.m. Friday, Washington State University Downtown Academic Center, 600 N. Riverpoint Blvd. Local authors will discuss their work and the way the wilderness is involved within it. Panelists include: Shann Ray (“American Copper”), Sharma Shields (“The Sasquatch Hunter’s Almanac”), Kris Dinnison (“You and Me and Him”), Jonathan Johnson (“In the Land We Imagined Ourselves” and “Mastodon, 80% Complete”), Andrea Scarpino (“What the Willow Said as it Fell”) and Ellen Welcker (“The Botanical Garden”). Features Meagan Ciesla and the winners of the Michael and Gail Gurian Award for Gonzaga student writers: Meg Besch, Mitch Gomes and Katie Polacheck. Ciesla, who joined GU’s English department faculty last fall, earned an MFA from the University of Wyoming and a doctorate from the University of Missouri. Her novella “Me, Them, Us” was published in Iron Horse Literary Review, and her short fiction has appeared in Redivider, Prime Number, Kenyon Review, The Long Story and others. 4. “Private Eyes” 7:30 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays through April 23, North Idaho College, Boswell Hall Schuler Performing Arts Center, 1000 W. Garden Ave., Coeur d’Alene.
