Area scholars to be honored

Spokane high school seniors will be honored for their academic achievement Monday at the 24th annual Spokane Scholars Foundation Banquet.

Each student was nominated by their principal, counselor and teachers based on their success in one of the following areas: English, social studies, mathematics, science, world language and fine arts.

The foundation will award $60,000 in monetary grants, ranging from $1,000 to $4,000, to 24 of the 143 scholars, four students for each of the six content areas, based on grade-point average, course of study in the content area of nomination, test scores, original research or similar activities, and letters of recommendation.

Bob Herschkowitz, of Seattle’s Holocaust Center for Humanity, and a child survivor of the Holocaust, is the keynote speaker. The banquet begins at 6 p.m. at the Spokane Convention Center, 334 W. Spokane Falls Blvd.
