Newsmakers: Vols’ Alexis Johnson has 1 charged dropped, another reduced

Dismissed One of two charges against Tennessee defensive lineman Alexis Johnson was dismissed Thursday and the other was reduced from a felony count of aggravated assault to misdemeanor domestic assault. Johnson’s lawyer, Gregory Isaacs, said that the domestic assault charge would be dropped in six months under an agreement reached with the Knox County District Attorney’s office.

Announced The Dallas County District Attorney’s Office said indictments by the grand jury hearing Johnny Manziel’s case would be announced Monday, signaling that the former Cleveland Browns quarterback probably will face a criminal charge.

Withdrawn South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen won’t be taking part in golf’s return to the Olympics this year, the third major champion to withdraw in the last week as the deadline nears to confirm participation. Oosthuizen, who won the 2010 British Open at St. Andrews is No. 12 in the world, said he was pulling out because of family and scheduling issues.

Declared California forward Jaylen Brown is leaving after one season and declaring for the NBA draft. The Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, Brown’s announcement was hardly a surprise given he wasn’t expected to stay at Cal beyond his freshman season. …Point guard Isaiah Taylor has decided to skip his senior season at Texas and enter the NBA draft. The 6-foot-3 Taylor averaged 15 points, five assists and 2.8 rebounds as he started 33 games last season for the Longhorns, who went 20-13.

Transfered Cal linebacker Hardy Nickerson Jr. plans to transfer for his final season to play for his father at Illinois. Cal announced the younger Nickerson’s plans to move as a graduate transfer in a news release. His father, Hardy Nickerson was hired last month by new Illinois coach Lovie Smith as defensive coordinator.

Fired The University of Northern Colorado has fired men’s basketball coach B.J. Hill amid an NCAA investigation into allegations of violations in the program. University President Kay Norton said that Hill’s assistants were placed on administrative leave while the school continues to cooperate with the NCAA.

Pleadead Illinois basketball player Leron Black has pleaded guilty to misdemeanor aggravated assault after threatening a bouncer at a campus bar and has been sentenced to a year of probation.
