New 520 bridge now open to traffic in both directions

SEATTLE – The new State Route 520 floating bridge has opened to traffic in both directions.

The span over Lake Washington opened to eastbound traffic at 1:30 a.m. Monday. Westbound drivers have been able to use the new bridge since April 11.

The $4.5 billion six-lane bridge replaces a four-lane version built in 1963. The state says it features heavier, stronger pontoons and anchors that allow the structure to withstand stronger winds and waves. It also features a bus and carpool lane in each direction and a 14-foot-wide bike and pedestrian path.

The old bridge is expected to be dismantled by the end of the year.
