Volunteer Diane Shuman plants ornamental grasses in the scattering garden at the Washington State Veterans Cemetery at Medical Lake Tuesday, April 26, 2016. The garden, which opened shortly after the cemetery opened in 2010, is a place where the families of veterans can spread the ashes of their loved ones among the shrubs, grasses and flowers of the garden. Shuman's parents, Jack and Elaine Thorsen, are interred at the cemetery. Jack Thorsen was a Korean War veteran. Several volunteers spent Tuesday planting annuals among the perennials, all of which are deer resistant. (Jesse Tinsley / The Spokesman-Review)
