Area roundup: Gonzaga evens series with BYU
Jeffrey Bohling went 3 for 5 with a home run, double and three runs batted in to power the Gonzaga Bulldogs to a 9-5 win over the BYU Cougars in West Coast Conference baseball action on Friday in Provo, Utah.
Nick Brooks added two hits, including a double, and two RBIs for the Zags (25-14, 13-7), who rallied from a pair of one-run deficits and evened the series at 1-1.
Gonzaga has a 1 1/2 game lead over second-place BYU (29-10, 11-6) in WCC play. The two teams wrap up the three-game series on Saturday at noon.
Ryan Walker (6-2) fired six shutout innings, allowing just two hits, and his batterymate Ty Johnson went 4 for 4 with a pair of RBIs to spark the Washington State Cougars (14-23, 7-12) to a 4-0 victory over the Oregon Ducks (18-17, 7-9) in the opener of a three-game Pac-12 series in Eugene, Oregon.
The Cougars finished with nine hits – all singles. Game 2 is Saturday at 2 p.m.
John Naff went 3 for 3, including a go-ahead solo home run in the top of the eighth inning, to lead the Washington Huskies (24-14, 10-6) to a 4-2 victory over the California Golden Bears (23-15, 9-7) in a Pac-12 showdown in Berkeley, California.
Reliever Alex Nesbitt (2-1) allowed the tying run to score in the bottom of the seventh before picking up the win. Troy Rallings threw the final two innings to notch his 13th save.
Softball
Taran Alvelo (17-5) allowed just three hits in seven innings with six strikeouts and the Washington Huskies (31-10, 12-7) broke open a close game with a five-run sixth inning en route to a 6-0 win over the Utah Utes (30-14, 11-5) in Pac-12 play in Seattle.
Utah made five errors and four of the runs allowed in the sixth were unearned.
Men’s golf
Rylee Iacolucci shot a 3-under-par 69 to help propel the Idaho Vandals into second place after the first day of the Big Sky Conference tournament at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nevada.
Iacolucci’s effort puts him in a tie for fourth place, while the Vandals finished at 6-under 282. Sacramento State leads at 275.
Idaho’s Ryan Porch (70) and Daniel Sutton (71) are also in the top 10.
The Washington Huskies (711) are in fifth place, while the Washington State Cougars (745) are last after the 36-hole first round of the Pac-12 Conference tourney in Salt Lake City.
Carl Yuan led UW with a 2-under 69.
Stanford (688) grabbed a five-shot lead over California for the first-day lead.
Track and field
Eastern Washington Eagles freshman Larry Still cleared 16 feet, 3 1/2 inches, to win the men’s pole vault at the Oregon State High Performance Track and Field Meet in Corvallis.
The EWU women – led by runners-up finishes from Erin Clark and Macey Weitz – captured five of the top eight spots in the women’s pole vault. Clark and Weitz cleared 12-3 1/2.
Women’s tennis
The Gonzaga Bulldogs saw their most successful season in program history come to an end with a 4-0 semifinal loss to Saint Mary’s in the West Coast Conference Championship in Claremont, California.
