Oscar-winning ‘Son of Saul’ follows Auschwitz prisoner’s plight

What’s new for home viewing on video-on-demand and Netflix, Amazon Prime and other streaming services.

Pay-per-view / Video On Demand

“Son of Saul” drops the viewer into the horrors of Auschwitz as one prisoner tries to give a proper burial to a young boy. This immersive, haunting drama from Hungary is not like any Holocaust drama you’ve seen before, and it won the Academy Award for Foreign Language Film. Hungarian with subtitles, rated R. Also on DVD and Blu-ray.

From the sublime to the ridiculous, the buddy comedy “Ride Along 2” stars Ice Cube and Kevin Hart as Atlanta cops in Miami. PG-13. Also on DVD and Blu-ray.

Also new: the Christmas horror “Krampus” with a very bad Santa (PG-13), the western “Jane Got a Gun” with Natalie Portman (R), and the thriller “The Driftless Area” with Anton Yelchin and Zooey Deschanel (R).

Available On Demand before theaters is “High-Rise,” a near-future thriller starring Tom Hiddleston and Jeremy Irons (R). Available same day as select theaters nationwide is the crime drama “Term Life” with Vince Vaughn and Hailee Steinfeld (R).

Netflix

“Begin Again” (2014, R), starring Keira Knightley as a singer/songwriter in a funk and Mark Ruffalo as a music producer on the skids, is a sweet musical drama from the director of “Once.”

For the kids there’s the animated “Minions” (2015), starring those goofy little yellow henchmen of the “Despicable Me” movies (PG), and Netflix original revival of the cult animated series “Danger Mouse: Season 1.”

More Netflix originals: the documentary “Team Foxcatcher” (2016), about the murder of U.S. Olympic wrestler David Schultz by millionaire John du Pont (dramatized in the movie “Foxcatcher”), and the comedy “Special Correspondents” from writer/director/star Ricky Gervais. Not rated.

Amazon Prime Video

“Learning to Drive” (2015) is a low-key, grown-up comedy about a Manhattan writer (Patricia Clarkson) and a Sikh driving instructor (Ben Kingsley) whose friendship helps them navigate life-changing events (R).

Foreign imports: from France comes “Eden” (2014) set in the nineties club culture of Paris, and from Spain comes “10,000 Km” (2015) with Natalia Tena (“Game of Thrones”) trying to keep a long-distance romance alive. Both subtitled, both rated R.

HBO Now

“Jurassic World,” the summer hit of 2015, pits Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard against an alarmingly smart and vicious dinosaur hybrid when it (inevitably) escapes and attacks a park full of patrons (PG-13).

“Game of Thrones: Season 6” is now underway, with new episodes arriving each Sunday.

Also new: the experimental documentary “Heart of a Dog” (2015) from musician and multimedia artist Laurie Anderson (not rated).
