May Day march planned to support workers, immigrant rights

SEATTLE – Thousands of people are expected to turn out for Sunday’s march in Seattle in support of workers and immigrant rights.

Organizers say the annual May Day March for Workers and Immigrant Rights will in part commemorate the huge marches held nationwide in 2006 for immigrant rights.

Sunday’s event begins at 1 p.m. in Seattle’s Judkins Park. The march leaves from the Central District at 3 p.m. and ends with a rally at the federal courthouse downtown.

A separate anti-capitalist march is slated to begin at Westlake Park later in the evening.

Last year, Seattle police clashed with black-clad May Day protesters who hurled wrenches, rocks and bottles at officers and damaged property following an earlier peaceful march. Police arrested 16 people.
