Hacked Democratic Congressional Campaign documents released

A computer hacker Friday released emails and other documents from the server of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

The documents released by someone calling himself Guccifer 2.0 are mostly mundane, including lists of passwords, mobile phone numbers, email addresses of congressional staff and lists of guests at fundraisers. Reuters previously reported that the FBI is investigating the hack.

It’s the latest release of information from cyberattacks – including groups with purported to ties to Russia – against Democratic organizations amid the 2016 presidential campaign. Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz was forced to resign last month as chair of the Democratic National Committee after a firestorm over leaked emails posted by WikiLeaks showed committee staff favored Hillary Clinton and attempted to undermine Sen. Bernie Sanders for the party’s presidential nomination.

The FBI is confident the Russian government hacked U.S. Democratic Party groups and the personal emails of political operatives, a person familiar with the findings has said.

The Russian government has dismissed the idea that it was involved in the hack of the Democratic National Committee, and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange said there’s “no proof whatsoever” that Moscow was involved.
