NBA: Few players have ever had the feeling Anthony Davis did Sunday.

The star center scored a franchise-record 59 points and pulled down 20 rebounds as New Orleans won 111-106 at Detroit.

“That was a lot of fun, because the rim looked so big that it felt like everything I shot was going to go in,” Davis said. “I wasn’t keeping track of my point total, but the guys were telling me at the timeouts. They wanted me to get 60.”

The previous club record was 50 points by Jamal Mashburn exactly 13 years earlier against the Grizzlies. Davis went 24 of 34 from the floor and made his only two 3-pointers. He added nine free throws in 10 attempts.

Davis had 19 points in the fourth quarter and broke the scoring record for the Palace of Auburn Hills set by LeBron James with 48 points in an Eastern Conference finals game on June 1, 2007.

“That one is on me. That was terrible coaching – terrible,” Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy said. “You’ve got to come up with something. You can’t let a guy get 59. That’s on me.”

Davis joined Shaquille O’Neal and Chris Webber as the only NBA players with 50 points and 20 rebounds since 1983.

“I don’t think it will really sink in until tomorrow what I did today,” Davis said. “But being in the history books with C-Webb and Shaq? That’s something special.”

Cavs thunder OKC: Kevin Love had 29 points and 11 rebounds, Tristan Thompson had 14 and 14 and LaBron James 25 points and 11 assists as Cleveland rolled to a 115-92 win at Oklahoma City for its fifth-straight win.

Kevin Durant scored 26 points and Russell Westbrook had 20 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds in the Thunders’ most lopsided defeat of the season.

Blazers keep winning: C.J. McCollum scored 31 points, including two free throws with 2.7 seconds left, and Portland beat visiting Utah 115-111.

Damian Lillard had 30 points and five assists for the Trail Blazers, who have won 14 of 17.

Milestone for Nowitzki: At Dallas, Dirk Nowitzki became the sixth player in history to score 29,000 career points as the Mavericks whipped Philadelphia 129-103.

Lady Vols tie mark

for most losses

COLLEGE WOMEN: Alexis Hyder scored 17 points, including two free throws with 3.4 seconds left, and host LSU beat No. 24 Tennessee 57-56 to put the Lady Vols’ streak of 565 consecutive weeks in The AP poll in jeopardy.

Tennessee (16-11, 7-7 SEC) has been ranked in the poll dating back to Feb. 17, 1985. The Tigers (9-18, 3-11) are the second team with a losing record to beat Tennessee this season. Before this season, Tennessee hadn’t lost to a team with a losing record since 1979.

Banham sets Big Ten record: Aerial Powers scored a career-high 40 points and No. 25 Michigan State (20-7, 11-5) withstood Rachel Banham’s 52 points that made her the Big Ten’s all-time leading scorer to take a 114-106 victory over visiting Minnesota (18-9, 10-6).

Banham now has 2,921 points to pass Penn State’s Kelly Mazzante (2001-04) with 2,919.

Ohio State goes big: Ameryst Alston scored 39 points and Kelsey Mitchell 35 as No. 5 Ohio State (23-4, 15-1 Big Ten) routed visiting Illinois (9-18, 2-14) 117-74.

In front of a crowd of 50,426 at TCF Bank Stadium on the University of Minnesota campus with an ideal faceoff temperature of 35 degrees, ten players tallied at least one point for the Wild, including all three former Golden Gophers in Vanek, Haula and Mike Reilly, whose college careers took place across the street at Mariucci Arena.

The Wild improved to 4-0 under interim coach John Torchetti and 3-0 this season against the Blackhawks, the team that has eliminated them from the playoffs in each of the past three years.
