People: Directors earn Guild awards

From wire reports

Adam McKay, Tom McCarthy and George Miller landed their first nods from the Directors Guild of America in the group’s annual nominations announced Tuesday.

Nominations for outstanding achievement in directing went to McKay for the finance romp “The Big Short,” McCarthy for his Boston Globe investigative drama “Spotlight” and Miller for the post-apocalyptic sequel “Mad Max: Fury Road.” They are joined by more regular nominees Ridley Scott for the science-fiction blockbuster “The Martian” and Alejandro Inarritu for the frontier thriller “The Revenant.”

The DGA Awards are a closely watched indicator of which directors are likely Oscar nominees, and which films have the strongest support from filmmakers. This year, the only films to win the top nominations from producer, actor and director guilds are “Spotlight” and “The Big Short.”

Rupert Murdoch, Jerry Hall engaged

Media mogul Rupert Murdoch is engaged to Jerry Hall, the American actress and former supermodel who had a long-time relationship with Mick Jagger.

Murdoch, 84, and Hall, 59, placed a classified ad in the Births, Marriages and Deaths section of Tuesday’s Times newspaper, a British daily paper that is owned by Murdoch’s News Corp.

Murdoch, the executive chairman of News Corp., and Hall have been dating since late summer after being introduced by one of Murdoch’s sisters and his niece in his native Australia, the Times reported in a story posted online. They made their relationship public in October when they appeared together at the Rugby World Cup Final in London and got engaged last weekend while attending the Golden Globe Awards in Beverly Hills, California.

“They have loved these past months together, are thrilled to be getting married and excited about their future,” a spokesperson for the Murdoch family told the Times.

Murdoch was married to Patricia Booker, an Australian, and then to Scottish-born journalist Anna Torv. He later married Chinese-born Wendi Deng, whom he divorced in 2013.

Hall entered a long-term relationship with the Rolling stones frontman in the late 1970s. She and Jagger had an unofficial private Hindu marriage ceremony in Bali, Indonesia, in 1990, but during divorce proceedings in 1999, a British court declared the marriage invalid.
