Kane’s trick leads Hawks over Leafs

NHL: Patrick Kane had three goals for his first hat trick of the season and visiting Chicago beat Toronto 4-1 on Friday for its 10th straight win.

Kane, who added an assist for a four-point night, has an NHL-leading 28 goals on the season.

The win puts Chicago in first in the Central Division, a point ahead of the Dallas Stars, who played at Anaheim later Friday night.

Horvat scores in OT as Canucks beat Hurricanes: Bo Horvat scored his second goal with 1:35 left in overtime and Vancouver beat Carolina 3-2 in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Horvat has scored four of his eight goals this season against the Eastern Conference foe.

Namestnikov gets hat trick, Lightning beat Pens: Vladislav Namestnikov completed a hat trick in overtime and Tampa Bay beat Pittsburgh 5-4 in Tampa, Florida, to extend a season-high four-game winning streak.

Valtteri Filppula and Anton Stralman also scored for Tampa Bay.

Westbrook’s big game leads Thunder

NBA: Russell Westbrook got his 23rd career triple-double, leading Oklahoma City to a 113-93 victory over visiting Minnesota.

Westbrook finished with 12 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists for his fourth triple-double of the season.

Andrew Wiggins had 25 points for the Timberwolves, who lost their ninth straight.

Wall carries Wizards over Pacers: John Wall had 28 points, seven rebounds and eight assists to lead Washington to a 118-104 victory over Indiana in Indianapolis.

Paul George scored 21 points with five assists for Indiana.

Mavericks beat Bulls; Noah injured: Dirk Nowitzki scored 21 points to lead visiting Dallas to an 83-77 victory over Chicago.

Derrick Rose, back in the lineup after missing one game with knee pain, led the Bulls with 18 points.

Chicago’s Joakim Noah left the game after separating his left shoulder with just less than 10 minutes to play in the second quarter.

Snedeker takes one-shot lead at Sony

Golf: Brandt Snedeker played bogey-free and rolled in a couple of long birdie putts that carried him to a 5-under-par 65 and a one-shot lead over Kevin Kisner midway through the second round of the Sony Open in Honolulu.

Snedeker was at 12-under 128.

British Open champion Zach Johnson had a 66 and was two shots back, while Scott Piercy had a 66 and was three shots behind.

Tennis player Fish leads golf tourney: Former tennis player Mardy Fish scored 30 points in the inaugural Diamond Resorts Invitational to take a nine-point lead after the second round of the modified Stableford event for celebrity athletes and entertainers in Windermere, Florida.

The 34-year-old Fish, the top-ranked U.S. tennis player in 2011, birdied five of the first 12 holes and eagled the 17th.

Former pitcher Rick Rhoden was second after a 25-point round. Former NFL quarterback Billy Joe Tolliver was in third, and actor Jack Wagner was fourth.

Norway continues to dominate Alpine

Skiing: Kjetil Jansrud edged ahead of his Norwegian teammate Aksel Lund Svindal to win a World Cup combined event that favored downhill racers in Wengen, Switzerland.

Jansrud’s second World Cup win this season and 12th of his career extended a remarkable run in Alpine racing for Norway, where cross-country skiing is more popular.

Norwegian racers have 10 victories in the 17 men’s events this season.

Velez Zuzulova wins second straight slalom: Veronika Velez Zuzulova of Slovakia won her second straight World Cup night slalom with a blistering second run in Flachau, Austria.

Trailing second after the first run, Velez Zuzulova pushed past first-run leader Nastasia Noens of France for back-to-back wins on the Hermann Maier course this week. She also won a floodlit slalom on Tuesday.

Overall World Cup leader, Lara Gut of Switzerland, and second-place Lindsey Vonn of the United States sat out the race.

DePaul’s Bruno hits 600-win milestone

Women’s Basketball: DePaul coach Doug Bruno became the 19th Division I women’s basketball coach to reach 600 victories when the Blue Demons beat Butler 61-54 in Indianapolis.

Bruno, who is 600-315 in his 30-year career at DePaul, is the seventh coach to reach that milestone at one school according to the NCAA. He joins Pat Summitt (Tennessee), Geno Auriemma (UConn), Andy Landers (Georgia), Robin Selvig (Montana), Debbie Ryan (Virginia) and Harry Perretta (Villanova).

No. 10 Arizona State routs Colorado: Arizona State coach Charli Turner Thorne went into the season stressing what she called “no free bounce.” It’s resulted in 11 straight wins and left the 10th-ranked Sun Devils as the last unbeaten team in Pac-12 play.

Quinn Dornstauder had 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Arizona State used stifling defense to rout Colorado 64-37 in Tempe, Arizona.

Elisha Davis added 11 points for the Sun Devils (14-3, 5-0), who allowed 26 percent shooting from the field.

Phelps, Ledecky win in Texas event

Miscellany: Michael Phelps won the 100-meter butterfly race in an Arena Pro Swim Series event in Austin, Texas.

Preparing for his fifth and final Olympics, the 30-year-old Phelps finished in 51.94 seconds. He won the gold medal in the event in the 2012 Olympics in London.

Katie Ledecky won the 400 freestyle in 3:59.54, the fifth-best time ever. The 18-year-old American holds the world record and seven of the top eight times.

Thorns choose Sonnett in draft: The Portland Thorns took Virginia’s Emily Sonnett with the first overall pick in the National Women’s Soccer League draft, as the league prepares for a crucial fourth year.

Sonnett, the ACC Defender of the Year, is currently in January training camp with the U.S. women’s national team.

Phillips officially ruled a suicide: A California coroner says imprisoned former NFL running back Lawrence Phillips committed suicide while he was awaiting a trial that could have brought him the death penalty in Sacramento, California.

The Kern County coroner’s office said the 40-year-old Phillips killed himself, but released no other details.

Phillips went to prison in 2008 on a sentence of more than 31 years. He was convicted of twice choking his girlfriend in 2005 and of driving his car into three teens later that year.
