Education Notebook: GU to host high school summer dance classes

Local high school students are invited to participate in Gonzaga University’s Summer Dance Intensive, hosted by GU’s Dance Department, Monday through July 30.

The dance intensive will include classes on ballet, modern dance, contemporary/composition and hip-hop dance. On July 30, there will be a class, lunch, rehearsal and an in-studio performance.

The program takes place at GU’s theater and dance studios, 502 E. Boone Ave.

Cheney soccer camp to be held

The Cheney School District is hosting the 2016 Blackhawk Soccer Camp for boys and girls entering kindergarten through eighth grades.

Lee University’s Paul Furey, the 2014 national champion men’s soccer coach, and girls varsity coach of the Blackhawk soccer team, Nels Radtke, will lead campers of all levels.

The camp will be Monday through July 29 from 9 a.m. to noon at Cheney High School and costs $110, which includes a T-shirt.

Mail checks and registration to Blackhawk Soccer Camp, Nels Radtke, Cheney High School, 460 N. Sixth St., Cheney, WA 99004, or drop them off at the high school.

Meal program begins in Valley

The Spokane Valley Community of Christ will begin its free summer meal program on Tuesday. Children’s activities are also provided.

Meals will be served Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, noon to 1 p.m., through Aug. 25 at the Spokane Valley Community of Christ, 11515 E. Broadway Ave., in Spokane Valley.

Kiwanis grants scholarships

Spokane Kiwanis Charities Foundation has awarded $1,500 Community Service Scholarships to seven recent high school graduates.

The seven scholarship winners, plus the high school they graduated from and the college they are planning to attend, are Mary Avent Arnold (Rogers High School, Spokane Community College), Casey Ball (Mead High School, Eastern Washington University), Pe Pet Hiaing (Ferris High School, Northern State University), Shayla Payne (Cheney High School, University of Washington), Diana Ramirez-Torres (Rogers High School, University of Washington), Hunter Simpson (University High School, Gonzaga University) and Emma Stevenson (West Valley High School, Spokane Community College).

The Community Service Scholarship is awarded to students who exemplify the Kiwanis mission to change the world one child and one community at a time.

Medical Lake grad awarded

Recent Medical Lake High School graduate Jeremy Ryan has received the National Merit Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering Scholarship, as part of the National Merit Scholarship Program.
