Stream on Demand: Batman takes on Superman

What’s new for home viewing on video-on-demand and Netflix, Amazon Prime, and other streaming services.

Pay-Per-View / Video-On-Demand

“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” pits the Dark Knight (Ben Affleck) against the Man of Steel (Henry Cavill) while Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) pulls the strings. It’s big and bombastic and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) joins in for a proto-“Justice League” team-up. PG-13. Also on DVD and Blu-ray in a longer cut.

Real life meets creative fiction in two films: “Miles Ahead,” directed and co-written by Don Cheadle, who stars as jazz legend Miles Davis, and the comedy “Elvis & Nixon” with Michael Shannon and Kevin Spacey. Both R. Also on DVD and Blu-ray and at Redbox.

Also new: “Louder Than Bombs,” an intimate drama of loss and grief starring Jesse Eisenberg and Isabelle Huppert (R), the haunting British drama “Bridgend” (not rated), and the romantic anthology “Rio, I Love You” (R, subtitled).

Available same day as select theaters nationwide is the science fiction parable “Equals” starring Kristen Stewart (PG-13) and the allegorical “The Childhood of a Leader” with Robert Pattinson (not rated).

Amazon Prime Video

Robin Williams is not quite “World’s Greatest Dad” (2009) but he’s trying in this black comedy. It was shot in Seattle. R.

“Embrace of the Serpent” (2015), a Colombian odyssey through the Amazonian rainforest, this film was an Oscar nominee for Best Foreign Film. Not rated, with subtitles.

From China comes John Woo’s lavish historical battle epic “Red Cliff” (2008). R, with subtitles.

Private eye TV: the first seasons of the jazzy “Peter Gunn” (1958) with Craig Stevens and the hard-boiled “Mike Hammer: Private Eye” (1997) with Stacy Keach are now available.

Netflix

The anthology horror film “Holidays” (2016) presents eight short films set on different holidays and the comedy “Internet Famous” (2016) parodies reality TV with (fake) web celebrities competing for their own TV series.

Streaming TV: “BoJack Horseman: Season 3,” an animated comedy for adults, and the high school drama “Degrassi: Next Class: Season 2” and Disney Channel’s “Liv and Maddie: Season 3” for kids.

Hulu

The heist thriller miniseries “The Last Panthers” jumps from London to Marseille to Serbia. Six episodes and three languages, with subtitles.

HBO Now

“Straight Outta Compton” (2015) tells the story of N.W.A., the provocative hip-hop group that made stars of Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, and Eazy-E and launched gangsta rap. R.

Bill Maher is making his bonus “Real Time” convention coverage available to non-subscribers live on YouTube and later on his Facebook page. Republican Conventions now available, Democratic Conventions stream Wednesday and Thursday.
