Burn ban takes effect in Spokane County Friday

Campfires and other outdoor burning have been banned in most of Spokane County following recent high temperatures that have dried out grasses and other fuels.

Burn bans will take effect in unincorporated Spokane County, the city of Spokane and the cities of Spokane Valley, Liberty Lake and Millwood on Friday. The Department of Natural Resources previously announced a burn ban on all its land in Eastern Washington and will expand it statewide on Friday.

The fire danger is high in Spokane County, Okanogan County and parts of Stevens and Lincoln counties.

Residents are still allowed to use barbecues, portable outdoor fireplaces and patio warmers, but all open burning has been restricted. People who use the approved items must have water, dirt or a fire extinguisher on hand.

Violating the burn ban is a misdemeanor and is punishable by up to a $1,000 fine and/or 90 days in jail.
