Baseball Notes: No discipline for Dodgers in laser flap at Citi Field

Associated Press

The Los Angeles Dodgers aren’t going to face any discipline from Major League Baseball over the laser flap at Citi Field last weekend.

MLB didn’t find a violation during the Dodgers’ weekend series against the New York Mets. Other media outlets reported the decision earlier Thursday.

“I have no other comment on it,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “We’ll abide by whatever the Major League Baseball rules specify.”

The Mets wanted MLB to look into how the Dodgers were using a laser range-finder to set defensive positioning in the outfield before a game, and whether they were marking the field for shifts.

MLB has told teams that using electronic devices is OK before games, but not during play. MLB also has informed clubs that they can’t leave anything on the field.

Bogaerts extends hitting streak

Boston Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts extended his career-high hitting streak to 26 games with a two-run double in the sixth inning of Thursday night’s game against the Baltimore Orioles.

Bogaerts lined out to shortstop and struck out before delivering a bases-loaded hit off Ubaldo Jimenez.

The 26-game streak is second-longest in the majors this season behind the 29-game run of teammate Jackie Bradley, Jr.

David Ortiz followed Bogaerts’ double with a three-run homer to give Boston a 5-4 lead.

Rounding the bases

Pence missed six starts with another right hamstring injury before returning on Saturday. … The Minnesota Twins have delayed right-hander Kyle Gibson’s return from the disabled list because of stiffness in his back, bringing Phil Hughes back from the bullpen before he ever pitched in relief. The Twins announced before their game against Tampa Bay that Hughes would start instead of Gibson. … Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Francisco Cervelli left Thursday’s game against the Miami Marlins in the third inning shortly after being hit in the foot by a pitch. Cervelli was hit in the top of the second inning. … Kansas City Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas has had season-ending surgery on his right knee. Moustakas tore his ACL in a May 22 collision with teammate Alex Gordon. … Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Ryan Vogelsong has undergone surgery to repair multiple facial fractures suffered when he was hit by a pitch. The team says Vogelsong is resting comfortably at home.
