College softball: Whitworth splits home doubleheader

Makayla Lefever improved to 5-0 with a three-hitter Saturday as Whitworth (8-2, 5-1) achieved a split of a Northwest Conference softball doubleheader with a 3-1 win over visiting George Fox at Marks Field.

Lefever struck out five, walked none and allowed an earned run in the seventh inning on Courtney Howard’s one-out homer to left field.

Chelsey Hayes’ one-out RBI single to left field in the third gave the Pirates a 1-0 lead. Tessa Matthews added a two-out RBI single to center in the fifth, and the Pirates added a sixth-inning run on a throwing error.

The Bruins (6-4, 3-3) won the opener 1-0 as Abbie Bergerson (2-1) threw a six-hitter and Howard doubled and scored on a dropped fly in the seventh.

North Idaho improved to 5-2 by defeating Southwestern Oregon 3-1 and Chemeketa 7-3 at a tournament in Lacey, Washington.
