Fires damage abandoned home, two apartment buildings in Spokane

Fires on Sunday morning in Spokane damaged an abandoned home and two apartment buildings. No one was injured.

A malfunctioning wall heater sparked a fire on the second floor of the Ambassador Apartments, at 1819 W. Pacific Ave., around 5 a.m., a city news release said.

Firefighters are investigating the cause of a fire in the laundry room at the Father Bach Haven apartments, 108 S. State St., which started around 2:45 a.m. Heavy smoke was coming from the third floor when firefighters arrived, the release said. The sprinkler system controlled the fire’s spread and all of the residents got out safely. No one was displaced and damage was minimal according to Assistant Chief Brian Schaeffer.

A firefighter on his way to work around 7 a.m. noticed a fire at an abandoned home at 811 W. 13th Ave. The house was boarded up and firefighters had to force their way into the home, but got it under control quickly, the release said. The cause is under investigation.
