Newsmakers: Patriots acquire Martellus Bennett, Nationals’ Bronson Arroyo injured
Aquired The New England Patriots acquired Martellus Bennett from the Chicago Bears, giving them another talented tight end to pair with All-Pro Rob Gronkowski. New England also gets Chicago’s sixth-round pick in this year’s draft in exchange for the Patriots’ fourth-rounder in the deal announced on Thursday.
Injured Washington Nationals right-hander Bronson Arroyo said he has a “significantly torn” right rotator cuff, but he’s not ready to call off his comeback attempt at 39 just yet. Arroyo has not pitched since June 14, 2014, because of Tommy John surgery. The 15-year veteran said he is not going to have surgery and will either rehabilitate the injury or retire.
Signed The Cleveland Browns signed safety Rahim Moore to a one-year contract. Moore spent last season with Houston before being released by the Texans earlier this month. He signed a three-year, $12 million deal last year but was benched for the team’s final nine regular-season games.
The New Orleans Saints signed linebacker James Laurinaitis and safety Jamarca Sanford to free-agent contracts. The Saints say Laurinaitis has signed for three years and Sanford for one year.
Revealed FIFA finally revealed Sepp Blatter’s pay deal, which was $3.76 million in 2015 as soccer’s embattled governing body reported a loss of $122 million for a year marred by scandal. After years of secrecy about presidential earnings, FIFA disclosed its disgraced former leader’s pay package three weeks after his employment officially ended.
Opened Switzerland’s attorney general opened a criminal case against former FIFA official Jerome Valcke “on suspicion of various acts of criminal mismanagement.” The Swiss federal office says it “conducted searches and interviews” but did not arrest Valcke.
Suspended Olympic swimming medalist Yulia Efimova of Russia faces a possible lifetime ban after being provisionally suspended for a second doping violation. Her U.S.-based coach, Dave Salo said Efimova has indicated she wants to fight the accusation.
Announced Hall of Famer Se Ri Pak is retiring after the season, ending a career that inspired a wave of South Korean players who followed her to the LPGA Tour. The 38-year-old Pak broke the news after opening with a 3-under 69 in the JTBC Founders Cup. Pak won 25 LPGA Tour titles and five majors.
