Obituary: Estell, Carroll David
Age 85
Carroll David Estell was born May 24, 1930 to Merle and Fay (Sasser) Estell in Stillwater, OK.
He passed peacefully on April 22, 2016 at Hospice of Spokane.
David spent the first 10 years of his life traveling much of the United States with his family before settling in Spokane.
David attended John R. Rogers High School.
He was a drummer in the Pep Band and the Orchestra.
David worked for Pacific Fruit.
He later attended Spokane Community College and worked in the building trades as a carpenter.
David worked for the Great Northern Railway and then the Burlington Northern Railway as a carman painter, brakeman, cab carpenter, and locomotive and train troubleshooter.
He retired in 1992 after 40 years of service to the railroad.
David was a member of the Naval Reserve, founding director of the Spokane Railway Credit Union, president of EMBA, member of Rocky Booster Club.
David was married to Joy Marie Shanks on August 20, 1949 at St Patrick Church, where he and Joy have been members for ever since.
They had three children, Daniel David, Patrick Ivan, and Julie Ann.
David enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, boating, RVing, and home improvements.
He and the family built a lake cabin and have enjoyed it for many years.
In later years David and Joy attended functions for retired railroad workers.
The highlight of his life was a trip that he and Joy took to Ireland.
David was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Jeanette and her husband Grant Jepsen.
David is survived by his wife Joy of 66 years; children: Dan and Karen (Fuhrer) Estell, Patrick Ivan Estell, and Steve and Julie (Estell) Lentini; grandchildren Ryan Estell, Michelle Estell and Randy, Jon and Tania (Lentini) Gibbs, and Frank and Morgan (Roggow) Lentini; great-grandchildren Lillias Estell and Russell Gibbs; Steve and Lory Jepsen, Mark and Mary Jepsen, Marie Jepsen and Bud Willhite, Wade and Cara Sasser, Joy Bartlett, and several other family members.
The family would like to express our thanks to the staffs and volunteers at Sacred Heart Medical Center, Northern Idaho Advanced Care Hospital, and Hospice of Spokane for all of their dedicated care.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at 2:00pm, with visitation beginning at 1:00pm, and will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery and Funeral Center Chapel, 7200 N. Wall St., Spokane.
Entombment will follow at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery.
