In brief: Latah Trail improvements have cyclists pumped

From staff reports

TRAILS – A bicycle repair station has been installed on the Latah Trail, an Idaho rail trail between Moscow and Troy, funded by the Latah County Board of Realtors.

The station allows cyclists to pump tires and do minor repairs.

Concrete was poured last week for the $1,500 project, and a Dero Fixit Air Kit 2 repair station was installed near one of the restrooms on the side of the trail about 5 miles east of Moscow.

It is the first repair station on the trail, which stretches along state Highway 8, said Thomas Carroll, Latah Trail Foundation executive director.

Carroll said the repair station provides all the tools a bicyclist would need, like wrenches and screwdrivers.

Other improvements underway on the Latah Trail include asphaltic concrete surfacing over 3 miles of gravel trail in the Little Bear Creek Canyon near Troy. That portion of trail will be closed until Oct. 21.

Mica Peak trail plan needs input

TRAILS – Volunteers have been scouting existing and proposed routes for non-motorized use at Mica Peak Conservation Area this summer, and more work needs to be done.

Spokane County Parks planners are preparing a trail master plan for the 911-acre conservation area acquired in 2013 on the west slope of the 5,280-foot peak in Spokane Valley.

“The volunteer experience and observations on Mica Peak trails are very important to the planning effort,” said Michael Terrell, a consultant working on the plan. “We do need additional input from hikers, bikers, horseback riders and others.”

Visitors to Mica Peak are encouraged to pick up and fill out a feedback form at the trailhead.
