Newsmakers: Hammer thrower has medal taken away

Stripped Russian hammer thrower Tatyana Lysenko has been stripped of her gold medal from the 2012 London Olympics on Tuesday after testing positive in reanalysis of her stored doping samples. The IOC says Lysenko tested positive for the steroid turinabol and has been retroactively disqualified from the games.

Fined UFC star Conor McGregor is being fined $150,000 by the Nevada Athletic Commission for a profanity-laced bottle-throwing fracas during a pre-fight news conference with rival Nate Diaz in August in Las Vegas. The commission on Monday unanimously approved the penalty.

Signed The Buffalo Sabres have signed defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen just in time for the start of the season. The team announced Ristolainen signed a six-year, $32.4 million contract, two days before Buffalo opens the season hosting the Montreal Canadiens.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have re-signed forward Nikita Kucherov to a three-year contract worth an annual average of $4.766 million. Kucherov had 30 goals and a team-best 66 points last season. The team announced the deal two days before the regular-season opener against Detroit.

Returned Sponsor NTT Data and driver Tony Kanaan will return to Chip Ganassi Racing next season. It will be Kanaan’s 20th season in Indy car racing, his fourth with Ganassi. The former Indianapolis 500 winner has one win and 11 podium finishes with Ganassi. NTT Data will be the primary sponsor on the No. 10 car for Kanaan.

Awarded Notre Dame’s Muffet McGraw will receive the John R. Wooden Award’s Legends of Coaching honor. The annual award is given to college basketball coaches who exemplify the late UCLA legend’s standard of coaching success and personal integrity. McGraw will receive the award on April 7 at the College Basketball Awards in Los Angeles.

Injured Atlanta Hawks center Tiago Splitter will miss the start of the regular season because a strained right hamstring. The injury is another setback for center-power forward, who was coming back from season-ending hip surgery that also forced him to sit out the Rio Olympics.

Florida State safety Nate Andrews will miss the rest of the season after suffering a partially torn pectoral muscle in his right shoulder Saturday during a victory over No. 16 Miami. Coach Jimbo Fisher made the announcement following practice.
