The Dirt: Catholic Charities to build apartments for homeless families in Spokane Valley

Catholic Charities Spokane plans to start a project in about a month to build a $10.2 million, 51-unit apartment complex for homeless families.

The Pope Francis Haven complex in Spokane Valley, at 16412 E. Sprague Ave., will be built on vacant land near the southeast corner of Sprague Avenue and Conklin Road. The site will have 27 two-bedroom apartments and 24 three-bedroom apartments.

A clubhouse geared to youth will have fitness equipment, an indoor rock-climbing wall, and a computer lab for after-school study. The complex includes three apartment buildings, each with three floors.

Also, Catholic Charities expects to break ground soon on the Father Bach III housing project in downtown Spokane, across the street from the House of Charity. The $10 million, 51-unit Father Bach III is the third such supportive housing project in Spokane’s core for chronically homeless individuals.

Father Bach Haven III will include a bedbug treatment room for items to undergo a heat “cooking” treatment to kill bedbugs before anything goes into apartments. The building also will have mental health counseling and a medical clinic on site.

Rob McCann, Catholic Charities Spokane executive director, said funding is coming from tax credits and state funding through its trust fund.
