Pregame Notes:
- Hernandez makes his club-record 10th opening day start and ninth in a row, the longest active streak in the majors.
- Hernandez is 6-1 with a 1.49 ERA in those openers, but was 0-2, 8.10 ERA in two starts against Houston last season.
- In 24 at-bats, Houston’s Jose Altuve owns a .542 batting average against Hernandez.
- The Mariners placed LHP Dillon Overton on the Paternity List and recalled RHP Chase De Jong from AAA Tacoma. Overton leaves the team to join his wife for the birth of their first child. In 2016, De Jong combined for a 15-5, 2.82 mark in 26 starts with AA Tulsa (14-5, 2.86 in 25 GS) and AAA Oklahoma City (1-0, 1.69 in 1 GS) in the Dodgers minor league system.
Felix Hernandez needs three strikeouts tonight to move past Hall of Fame Lefty Grove (2,266) for 51st place on MLB’s all-time list.
Nelson Cruz has three homers in 22 at-bats against Astros starter Dallas Keuchel.
