Nancy Schmidt joined the Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness staff in late November as the winter program coordinator. Schmidt will lead the Winter Tracks outdoor education program, according to a news release. Schmidt has worked in education and counseling in Idaho since 2007.

The Winter Tracks program brings students outside during the winter with the hope of exposing them to the natural world. Students learn, among other things, about Leave No Trace, how to identify trees, winter mammals, birds, avalanche awareness and animal tracking, the news release said.

The day-long field trip experience is for students in the counties near the Scotchman Peaks, Sanders and Lincoln in Montana and Bonner in Idaho. Some Spokane schools also participate. For more information visit: scotchmanpeaks.org.

“I’m excited to be leading the way for the Friends of Scotchman Peak Wilderness Program Winter Tracks program this year,” Schmidt said in a news release. “I’m passionate about outdoor education, particularly helping people to understand and appreciate their local natural world.”
