High in the Kettles: Snowshoer Ken Vanden Heuvel welcomes the relative warmth of sunrise at his campsite on the crest of the Kettle Range near Republic, Washington, on Sunday. “I took the Jungle Hill trail from the Albian Hill Sno-Park...about 4 miles and 2,500 feet of elevation gain to the ridge where I camped,” he said. The next morning he broke trail another mile or more to Wapaloosie Mountain where he basked in the sunshine on the powder snow above the fog in the Columbia River valley below.
