Women’s Top 25 Capsules: No. 1 UConn rolls past Temple 97-69 for 96th consecutive win

PHILADELPHIA – Napheesa Collier had 25 points and 10 rebounds to help UConn to its 96th consecutive win with a 97-69 victory over Temple on Wednesday night.

Katie Lou Samuelson added 24 points for the Huskies (21-0, 9-0 AAC), who won their 35th consecutive game on the road, surpassing their own NCAA record. UConn’s last road loss came against Stanford on Nov. 17, 2014. That was also the last time the Huskies lost any game.

Temple (16-5, 6-2) only trailed 6-5 before UConn scored the next 13 points to blow the game open. The Huskies had seven consecutive layups in that run. Alliya Butts’ 3-pointer with 2:08 left in the first quarter stopped the Huskies spurt briefly before they closed the period with the final six points to go up 25-8.

UConn kept it going as Samuelson scored 10 points during a second quarter burst to extend the lead to 52-18 at the half and the rout was on.

No. 2 Baylor 83, Iowa State 52

AMES, Iowa – Alexis Prince scored 22 points and second-ranked Baylor got its 20th straight win.

It was the second time in three games that Prince topped 20 points for the Lady Bears (22-1, 11-0 Big 12), who overcame a shaky start with a 13-0 run that put the game out of reach.

Iowa State (12-10, 3-8) started strong at home, pulling to 34-31 late in the first half. But Baylor opened the second half with nine straight points and pushed its lead to 57-36 midway through the third quarter.

The Lady Bears outscored Iowa State 45-21 in the second half. Nina Davis scored 13 points and Alexis Jones had 12 for Baylor.

No. 12 Texas 85, Oklahoma State 71

STILLWATER, Okla. – Ariel Atkins made 11 of 13 shots, including all three of her 3-pointers, and scored a career-high 26 points, Kelsey Lang had her seventh double-double of the season and Texas beat Oklahoma State.

Lang had 21 points, on 10-of-14 shooting, and 12 rebounds, and Brooke McCarty scored 16 – including four 3s – and tied a career high with eight assists. Joyner Holmes added 12 points for Texas (17-4, 11-0 Big 12), which has won 15 in a row since losing to No. 1 Connecticut on Dec. 4.

Atkins scored six points during a 12-3 run that made it 51-48 with six minutes left in the third quarter and the Longhorns never trailed again. Atkins converted a 3-point play to spark a 10-4 spurt that made it 67-60 heading into the fourth and nine-straight points put Texas up 76-62 with 6:33 to go. Kaylee Jensen answered with a 3-point play but the Cowgirls would get no closer.

Mandy Coleman had a career-high 22 points, Jensen added 21 and Karli Wheeler scored 15 for Oklahoma State (13-8, 3-7), which has lost six of seven.

No. 14 Ohio State 87, Penn State 72

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Kelsey Mitchell had four 3-pointers and 23 points and Ohio State cruised to a sixth straight win.

The Buckeyes (20-5, 10-1 Big Ten) started with a 21-7 lead, pushed the margin into double digits for good in the second quarter and led by as many as 24.

Sierra Calhoun added 17 points and made 5 of 6 from 3-point range for the Buckeyes. Mitchell was 4 of 10 from deep and Ohio State finished 11 of 23. Stephanie Mavunga had 11 points and 11 rebounds.

The Nittany Lions (14-8, 4-6) had a 12-2 run to close to 82-68 with 3:31 left and got no closer. Teniya Page had 32 points and Sierra Moore had eight points and nine rebounds for Penn State.

Page made six of her 12 3-point attempts but Penn State went 9 for 27 as a team.

No. 18 Oklahoma 89, Kansas 52

NORMAN, Okla. – Maddie Manning had 19 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals, Peyton Little scored 16, and Oklahoma got its eighth straight home win.

Manning was 8 of 9 from the floor, including 3 for 3 from distance, to help the Sooners shoot a season-high 59.2 percent. Her eight field goals tied a career high.

Gabbi Ortiz added 12 points and Gioya Carter 11 for Oklahoma (17-6, 8-3 Big 12). Freshman Nancy Mulkey blocked a career-best eight shots to help the Sooners finish with a season-high 13. Mulkey’s blocks were the fourth most in school history and the most since Courtney Paris in 2008.

Oklahoma started the game on a 15-2 run, outscored the Jayhawks 24-13 in the first quarter and led 47-28 at halftime. The Sooners finished the half shooting 73.1 percent for their best shooting half of the season.

Kylee Kopatich paced Kansas (7-15, 1-10) with 14 points and Jessica Washington added 11.

No. 20 South Florida 72, Cincinnati 52

TAMPA, Fla. – Maria Jespersen had a career high-tying 26 points for the third time this season and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead South Florida past Cincinnati.

Ariadna Pujol added 14 points and nine rebounds as the Bulls (18-3, 7-1 American) dominated the boards 53-30. Kitija Laksa added 11 points and Laia Flores had 10 assists.

USF turned 16 offensive rebounds into 17 second-chance points and had a 30-16 scoring advantage inside.

Ana Owens had 11 points and eight assists for the Bearcats (14-8, 5-4), who have lost eight straight in the series.

The Bulls used a 9-0 run in the third quarter to take the lead for good. They had another 9-0 run in the second to stretch a 19-13 lead to 37-25 by halftime. An 11-1 run in the third, with the last seven coming from Jespersen, made it 56-39 and the Bulls cruised to their 10th-straight home win in conference.
