2. Spokane Symphony Classics 7: “A Kaleidoscope of French Virtuosity”
What better way to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Maurice Ravel’s death than listening to some of his greatest works? “La Valse” parodies the waltz, symbol of Austrian-Hungarian imperialism; “Rhaposie espagnole” is a portrait of Spain painted in four dances; and “Boléro” is 15-minutes of a simple melody that builds through orchestration, ending in a burst of fireworks. Also on the bill: “The Tragedy of Salome” by Florent Schmitt, and XIX “Le Soleil” from “Arcanes Symphoniques” by Richard Dubugnon. Eckart Preu, conductor. 5. Jake Shimabukuro
Hawaiian music with ukelele, the traditional Hawaiian instrument of four strings and two octaves is stretched and molded into a complex and bold new musical force. He came to fame in 2006 via YouTube, and has continued to enthrall audience with fast fingerwork and blend of jazz, blues, funk, rock, bluegrass, classical, folk, and flamenco.
