The Northwest Athletic Conference will have a new men’s basketball champion at the end of its tournament next weekend.

Defending champ and No. 2 seed from the East Region CC Spokane went cold in the second half and fell to West No. 3 seed Lower Columbia 81-65 in a first round game that started after 10 p.m. on Thursday and ended early Friday morning.

The Sasquatch led 42-38 at the half and by 12 early in the second half but couldn’t buy a bucket for long stretches, settled for poor shots and committed costly turnovers as the Lower Columbia lead grew to 18 points in the latter stages of the game.

Lower Columbia outscored CCS 43-23 in the second half as the Sasquatch shot 28 percent after intermission and hit just 8 of 35 (23 percent) from beyond the arc.

Keun Palu-Thompson led five in double figures for Lower Columbia with 16 points. Devin Johnson added 13 points while Elijah Colton-Welch had 12 points and 10 boards.

The Red Devils will face South No. 4 Mt. Hood, which upset North No. 1 Shoreline 74-71. Five of the eight lower seeds won on Thursday.

CC Spokane was led by Levi Taylor with 18 points. Garrett Hull added 17 points – all in the first half – and Cesar Sandoval chipped in with 13 points.
