Candidate filing week ends Friday afternoon

Washington residents who are thinking about running for political office this year had better make up their minds. Friday is the last day to file for local offices on the November ballot.

Up for election are positions for municipal office, along with school, fire and other local service district boards. There are also a handful of judicial posts and a pair of legislative races in northeast Washington’s 7th District because of openings filled by appointments.

Many races have slowly filled up since Monday. But few have reached the point where voters will have to make a choice in August to whittle down the field.

State law requires any race with three or more candidates to go on the August 1 primary ballot. Those with just one or two candidates only appear on the general election ballot.

As of Thursday evening, voters in Spokane’s northeast council district had a three-way primary, but the other two council districts had just two candidates. Spokane Valley voters will have at least two council positions on the primary ballot. Medical Lake has three-way races for mayor and one council position.

Filing week ends Friday when the local county elections office closes. In Spokane County, that’s 4 p.m.
