Mariners Log: Sox’ Jose Quintana dominates as M’s generate one hit

JOSE QUINTANA DOMINANT, ARIEL MIRANDA SOLID FOR M’S

What happened: Melky Cabrera’s two-out RBI double in the 10th inning was the difference and the Chicago White Sox beat the Seattle Mariners 2-1 on Friday at Safeco Field.

Jose Quintana and David Robertson combined on a one-hitter for the Sox. Quintana went eight inning and gave up one run on one hit and one walk with seven strikeouts. Roberston (W, 3-1) pitched the last two innings and struck out two.

Mariners starter Ariel Miranda was solid, giving up one run on four hits and two walks with nine strikeouts. The only real mistake he made was to Jose Abreu, who hit an upper-deck job to left for his eighth home run of the season.

Tony Zych took the loss in the 10th. He hit leadoff hitter Kevan Smith. Leury Garcia pinch-ran and was sacrificed to second and Tim Anderson grounded out to move him to third before Cabrera’s big hit.

Jean Segura’s career-best 17-game hitting streak came to an end. He hit .387 during the streak.

Line Outs

• As the Mariners do often, they took the first lead. In the second, Danny Valencia led off with a triple. Taylor Motter lofted a ball to medium-deep center and Valencia went half-way but retreated on the throw. No matter, as Ben Gamel’s fly just shy of the track in left center plated Valencia easily. It was the Mariners only hit – and offensive highlight – of the night.
• In the third, Chicago’s Yolmer Sanchez tried to steal second with two outs. He was originally ruled safe, but replay showed that Motter got a piece of him before he had the bag and the call was reversed.
• The Sox picked up a pair of singles in the fifth with one out. but Miranda was able to get Smith on a fly out and struck out Willie Garcia to end the threat.
• Abreu vaporized a 2-0 slider that didn’t slide. One of the longer home runs that we’ll see in Safeco this season. It was estimated at 464 feet because it hasn’t quite landed yet.
• Deposed closer Edwin Diaz came on in the eighth. Willie Garcia met him with a single and Abreu singled with two down but Diaz came back to get Avasail Garcia on a grounder to get out without a run. Still, not really a confidence booster.
• Gamel led off the eighth and reached on an error as Sanchez misjudged a sky-high pop-up at second, but he got caught between first and second and was run down in a pickle. Not like the M’s could have used a base runner late in a tie game.

The Takeaway

Eh. Every team wins 60 and loses 60, and you worry about the rest. On Friday, it was one of the losses. Quintana’s a good pitcher and he just had the M’s number in this one.

Hero: Ariel Miranda. A career-high nine Ks. M’s starters have allowed two runs over 19 2/3 innings in the past three games.

Goat: Ben Gamel. You’re taught to run hard and Gamel does that. But he needed to have more situational awareness there in the ninth inning. The White Sox gifted the M’s a baserunner to lead off the eighth in a tie game and he gave it right back.

Seattle was limited to one hit, the 27th time in club history to collect one-or-fewer hits in a game. It’s the second time this season to be limited to one hit. …Despite the loss, Seattle has still won 7 of its last 10 games at home. …The M’s are 13-7 over their last 20 games at home after losing 2 of the first 3 home games. …The Mariners are now 0-4 in extra-inning games this season.
