Area roundup: Whitworth women move into first; WSU beats No. 24 Utah
Leah Corra scored in the 50th minute to give Whitworth a 1-0 victory over Pacific Lutheran in Spokane on Sunday and boost the Pirates into first place in the Northwest Conference women’s soccer standings.
Corra took a short pass in the box from McKenzie Hemp and put it into the net. Molly Webster made three saves and posted her third shutout this season.
Whitworth moved into first (6-3-1, 5-0-1) by handing the Lutes (7-2, 5-1) their first conference loss.
“(The win) speaks to our team’s belief that they can compete with other great teams,” Pirates head coach Bryan Olson said. “We saw the belief in both matches this weekend.
“It was nice to see us defend well against a great opponent. We’re really growing in our composure”
Washington State 3, Utah 0: Maegan O’Neill scored two goals off corner kicks from Maddy Haro and the Cougars (6-3-2, 1-2-0 Pac-12) defeated the No. 24 Utes (5-4-2, 0-2-1) in Pullman.
Morgan Weaver added her team-leading fifth goal and Ella Dederick tied her season-high with six saves and turned in her 14th career shutout.
The Cougars picked up their seventh shutout of the season, six at home.
Eastern Washington 4, Southern Utah 0: Jenny Chavez scored a pair of goals and the Eagles (8-4-1, 2-0-1 Big Sky) ran their unbeaten string to five matches with their third straight shutout in a win over the Thunderbirds (2-10-0, 1-3-0) in Cheney.
Chloe Williams and Allison Ranere also scored for EWU while M’Kenna Hayes had two assists. Emily Busselman made two saves in getting her third shutout this season.
Williams’ goal was the 38th in her career, one shy away from tying the conference all-time record.
Saint Mary’s 1, Gonzaga 0: Hannah Diaz scored on a free kick in the third minute and the Gaels (6-6-0, 2-0-0 West Coast) made it stand up for a victory over the Bulldogs (9-2-0, 1-1-0) in Moraga, California.
Washington 0, Colorado 0: Sarah Shimer made four saves for her seventh shutout in her past eight games as she and her Huskies (8-3-1, 1-1-1 Pac-12) teammates finished in a scoreless draw with the visiting Buffaloes (7-2-3, 1-1-1) in Seattle.
Volleyball
UCLA 3, Washington State 1: McKenna Woodford had 10 kills and Jocelyn Urias a match-high seven blocks but the Cougars (12-4, 1-3 Pac-12) lost to the 13th-ranked Bruins (9-4, 2-2) in Los Angeles 25-12, 25-12, 22-25, 25-13.
The Cougars hit just .099.
USC 3, Washington 0: Carly DeHoog had 15 kills on a .448 attack percentage but the No. 6 Huskies (13-2, 3-1 Pac-12) hit just .131 overall and were upset by the 20th-ranked Trojans (12-4, 4-0) in Los Angeles, 25-20, 25-21, 28-26.
Men’s soccer
Whitworth 3, Linfield 1: Moi Diaz snapped a 1-all halftime tie with two goals and the Pirates (4-6-1, 2-3-1 Northwest) defeated the Wildcats 92-8-0, 0-6-0) in Spokane.
Linfield took the lead in the fifth minute before Eric Espinoza tied it in the 26th. Whitworth’s Jesus Nunez made five saves.
Washington 2, Oregon State 1: Joey Parish scored two goals and the No. 17 Huskies (8-2-0, 1-0-0) rallied to defeat the Beavers (3-6-0, 0-1-0) in a Pac-12 opener in Seattle.
