Area roundup: Eagles slip past Fighting Hawks in OT women’s soccer match

Emma Vanderhyden picked the perfect time to score her first career goal for the Eastern Washington Eagles women’s soccer team.

Vanderhyden found the net unassisted at the 5-minute, 10-second mark of overtime to lift the Eagles (9-4-1, 3-0-1) to a 2-1 victory over the North Dakota Fighting Hawks (4-6-3, 2-3) in Big Sky Conference play on Friday in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

The win leaves EWU as the lone unbeaten team in conference play.

Aime Inthoulay staked the Eagles to a 1-0 lead just 3:20 into the match with assists from Vanderhyden and Allison Raniere.

Sophia Viviano scored two goals 15 minutes apart in the second half and Madeline Gotta added a goal and an assist as the Gonzaga Bulldogs (10-2-1, 2-1) rolled to a 6-2 victory over the visiting San Francisco Dons (4-8-2, 0-3) in West Coast Conference play.

Savanah Van Citters, Maggie Connors and Maddie Cooley also scored goals for the Bulldogs.

Kaitlyn Meeder scored the only goal of the match in the 39th minute and the Northern Colorado Bears (9-5, 3-2) held on for a 1-0 victory over the Idaho Vandals (4-7-2, 0-3-1) in Big Sky play in Greeley, Colorado.

Cheris Brown had a goal and an assist and the Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch (8-3-1, 6-1-1) breezed to a 7-0 victory over the Blue Mountain Timberwolves (0-10, 0-8) in Northwest Athletic Conference play at Spokane Falls CC.

Peyton Vasquez, Sabrina Castaneda, Emma Hartwig, Shannon Frucci, Julia Adair and Ashly Busch also scored for the second-place Sasquatch.

Zoe Lee scored two unassisted goals and Chelsea Love added a goal and an assist to propel the North Idaho Cardinals (9-2, 6-2) to a 5-1 victory over the Treasure Valley Chukars (4-7, 2-6) in NWAC play in Ontario, Oregon.

Men’s soccer

Hector Magana tallied two goals and an assist and Ian Schimandle notched a pair of goals to power the CC Spokane Sasquatch (8-2-2, 5-1-1) to a 7-0 win over the visiting Blue Mountain Timberwolves (1-8, 1-6) in NWAC action.

Chase Reidt, Arturo Bahena and Jesus Meraz-Rodriguez also scored for the first-place Sasquatch.

Omar Hernandez assisted on Conner Kinnune’s goal in the first half and picked up a second-half assist on an own goal by Treasure Valley as the North Idaho Cardinals (3-6-2, 2-3-2) posted a 2-0 win over the visiting Treasure Valley Chukars (2-7-1, 2-4-1) in NWAC play.

Volleyball

Taylor Mims tied for match-high honors with 24 kills, Alexis Dirige had 23 digs and Penny Tusa and Ashley Brown combined for 49 assists as the Washington State Cougars (12-4, 1-3) picked up their first Pac-12 win of the season with a 25-23, 25-19, 22-25, 30-28 win over the Colorado Buffaloes (12-3, 2-2) in Pullman.

Emiko Kahler finished with 17 kills and 15 digs and Cassandra Mendoza chipped in with 12 kills and 10 digs to power the Whitworth Pirates (9-6, 6-1) earned a 25-17, 25-15, 18-25, 25-19 win over the visiting Pacific Boxers (12-3, 5-2) in a battle for second place in the Northwest Conference.

Kayla Neumann led all players with 17 kills and Haylee Templeton piled up 46 assists as the North Idaho Cardinals (17-5, 7-0) rallied for a 23-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-13 win over the Columbia Basin Hawks (16-5, 8-1) in Pasco.

Alisha Straw had a match-high 10 kills and Kendall Collins doled out 21 assists as the CC Spokane Sasquatch (22-5, 6-2 NWAC) rolled to a 25-21, 25-23, 25-19 sweep over the host Blue Mountain Timberwolves (7-14, 2-6) in Pendleton, Oregon.
