Letter to the editor: Dave Holmes belongs among Eastern Washington’s coaching greats

Thanks to Jim Allen for the article that included Eastern’s great football coaches in the Thursday’s issue of The Spokesman-Review.

I would like to add another Eastern coaching great who should be on Eastern’s themed Mt. Rushmore of football.

Dave Holmes took over an Eastern (Eastern Washington State College) program that had gone winless in 1961 and 1962. His last three years (1965, 1966 and 1967) he had a combined record of 26-3-1, including a loss in the 1967 NAIA championship game. His career winning percentage of .719 may still be the highest of all Eastern’s football coaches.

Dave Holmes would be right at home on Eastern’s Mt. Rushmore.
