2018: Outdoor achievements

Feats of outdoor bravery, skill and persistence were achieved in 2018.

But those who came before were honored, too. On the 40th anniversary of his daring climb of K2, Spokane mountaineer and former county commissioner John Roskelley was inducted as an honorary member of the American Alpine Club in January.

Meanwhile, his son, Jess Roskelley, bagged a few first ascents in Pakistan after securing a hard-to-get climbing permit there. He was also named the second-most adventurous person by Men’s Journal.

Spokane climber Scott Coldiron established two serious climbing routes in the Cabinet Mountains. Coldiron has been ice climbing near Granite Lake for five years.

Speed climbing demon Scott Bennett set a record on Mt. Stuart’s complete north ridge, climbing the technical route in 5 hours, 57 minutes.

In March, Mt. Spokane Ski and Snowboard park’s all-volunteer ski patrol rescued a lost 15-year-old snowboarder in a late-night search and rescue mission.

In December, an Oregon man became the first person to solo traverse Antarctica without any assistance.

Mike Brede skied for 12 months in a row without driving more than 2.5 hours.

Yakima-area bow hunter Jake Fife bagged a nearly 300-pound buck and set a state record.

And Montana hunter Justin Sheedy tied the bighorn ram world record. Sheedy’s ram earned a score of 208 3/8, tying the current hunter-shot record.
