Gonzaga is deep into the 2018 basketball season, but its memorable 2017 campaign is still being feted 10 months later.

The Zags’ march to the NCAA championship game was voted the Sports Story of the Year at the Seattle Sports Commission’s 83rd annual MRTWestern Sports Star of the Year banquet Thursday night.

Gonzaga was selected over five other nominees: Washington Huskies going first in the NBA and WNBA drafts; approval of the KeyArena remodel; Seattle Sounders advancing to the MLS Cup; Seattle hosting the WNBA All-Star game; and Washington and Western Washington capturing national rowing titles.

Gonzaga finished with a school-record 37 wins and reached the program’s first Final Four. The Zags knocked off South Carolina before falling to North Carolina in the championship game.
