Area roundup: USC women overcome 10-point, fourth-quarter deficit to defeat Washington State

Aliyah Mazyck scored 25 points, including consecutive baskets during a game-deciding run, and USC rallied from a 10-point, fourth-quarter deficit to beat Washington State 73-72 on Friday night in Pac-12 Conference women’s basketball in Pullman.

The Trojans (14-6, 4-5 Pac-12) trailed 69-65 when they went on an 8-0 run over a 2-minute span that included three WSU turnovers to lead 73-69 with a minute left. Both teams exchanged missed shots with the Cougars having the last possession with 17 seconds left but unable to get a shot off.

Kristen Simon scored 24 points with 13 rebounds for her sixth double-double this season while Minyon Moore added 14 points, seven assists and eight steals for the Trojans.

Borislava Hristova scored 16 points, but only four in the second half, while Pinelopi Pavlopoulou made 3 of 4 3-point tries for 13 points for WSU (9-12, 2-7). The Cougars shot 50 percent but gave up 26 points off 17 turnovers, including seven fourth-quarter miscues.

WSU played its first game since head coach June Daugherty announced she was taking an indefinite medical leave of absence “to rest and heal” following an unspecified medical procedure a few weeks ago. Her husband, Mike Daugherty, is acting head coach in her absence. Daugherty missed three games previously this season.

(13) UCLA 86, Washington 69: Jordin Canada had 22 points on 9-of-15 shooting and the Bruins (16-4, 7-2 Pac-12) took control in the fourth quarter to beat the Huskies (7-13, 1-8) in Seattle.

The Huskies scored the first point of the fourth quarter on Amber Melgoza’s free throw that tied it at 62. The Bruins scored the next 19 points, making six of their first nine from the field.

Japreece Dean’s 3-pointer with 4:43 left capped the 19-0 run at 81-62. The Huskies missed all 13 of their field-goal attempts in the period.

UCLA trailed 37-34 at halftime and outscored Washington 28-24 in the third quarter to lead 62-61 going into the fourth.

Dean was 5 of 9 from 3-point range with 17 points, Michaela Onyenwere added 12 points, and Kennedy Burke and Monique Billings scored 10 apiece for the Bruins.

Melgoza had 20 points to lead the Huskies. Hannah Johnson scored 17 points and Jenna Moser added 16.

Whitworth 87, Pacific Lutheran 60: Camy Aguinaldo scored 19 of her game-high 24 points in the first half and the Pirates (8-10, 3-6 Northwest Conference) used a 20-0 third-quarter run to pull away from the visiting Lutes (5-13, 1-8).

Whitworth shot 30 of 56 from the field and 20 of 25 from the line while winning consecutive conference games for the first time this season.

Whitworth took a 25-16 lead with a 7-0 run to open the second quarter.

The Pirates’ Grace Douglas scored 14 points, hitting 3 of 7 from long range and 5 of 6 at the line. Madison Moffat added team highs of seven rebounds and four assists, and joined Aguinaldo with three steals.

College softball

Chapman 8-1, Whitworth 5-9: Madelyn Carlson scattered three hits over six innings and Natalie Edlin drove in three runs, allowing the Pirates to defeat the Panthers (1-1) in the second game and split a season-opening nonconference doubleheader in Orange, California.

Edlin’s two-run single highlighted a four-run fourth, giving the Pirates a 7-1 lead. Whitworth’s Chelsey Hayes finished 2 for 3 with three runs and two runs batted in.

Chapman, trailing 4-2, rallied to win the opener with a six-run sixth. Samantha Tong’s two-run double capped the inning, which was aided by two Whitworth errors.

Hayes tripled in a run and scored during the Pirates’ three-run first.

Wrestling

North Idaho 28, Eastern Oregon 12: Damian Trujillo (285 pounds), Brent Evans (149) and Levi Perry (184) recorded technical falls to lead the Cardinals (10-6) past the Mountaineers (5-11) in La Grande, Oregon.

NIC’s Esco Walker Jr. added a 13-0 major decision at 125.
