Area roundup: Mikayla Ferenz’s triple-double, Geraldine McCorkell’s 34 points spark Idaho women

Mikayla Ferenz became the first Idaho women’s basketball player to record a triple-double since 1984 on Saturday during a 78-64 win over North Dakota in Big Sky Conference play in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Ferenz finished with 15 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists and Geraldine McCorkell added a career-high 34 points as the Vandals improved to 10-10 overall and 6-3 in conference.

Idaho’s Mary Raese totaled 25 points, 13 rebounds and 11 blocks on Nov. 24, 1984.

McCorkell hit three consecutive 3-pointers to give UI a 39-29 lead with 2 minutes, 16 seconds left in the first half. Another McCorkell 3-pointer gave the Vandals an 18-point lead with 2:02 left in the third quarter.

After four consecutive wins, Idaho is in a three-way tie for third place, one game behind first-place Montana. The Fighting Hawks fell to 10-10, 3-6.

Northern Colorado 68, Eastern Washington 62: Savannah Smith scored 24 points, including a key 3-pointer with 43 seconds left, and the Bears (14-6, 6-3 Big Sky) held off the Eagles (10-11, 5-4) in Greeley, Colorado.

Smith’s late 3-pointer gave the Bears a 64-59 lead and a boost in a game that saw nine lead changes and 20 ties.

The Bears finished 20 of 21 from the line, including Smith’s 8-for-8 showing.

EWU’s Violet Kapri Morrow scored 24 points, shooting 10 of 18 from the field. Delaney Hodgins added 15 points and is 15 points away from becoming the program’s all-time scoring leader.

Puget Sound 72, Whitworth 67: Jamie Lange recorded her 12th double-double of the season, finishing with game highs of 26 points and 14 rebounds as the visiting Loggers (9-10, 4-6 Northwest Conference) rallied for their eighth consecutive win over the Pirates (8-11, 3-7).

Whitworth jumped to first-quarter leads of 11-2 and 20-6, but the Loggers whittled the Pirates’ advantage to four points by halftime.

The Pirates led 66-61 with 5:16 left, but Puget Sound took the lead for good on Elizabeth Prewitt’s jumper with 1:59 to go.

Grace Douglas led four Pirates in double figures with 15 points. Madison Moffat added 13 points, all in the second half, and Alli Kieckbusch also scored 13.

North Idaho 103, Blue Mountain 54: Whitney Meir scored 25 points, hitting 5 of 7 on 3-pointers, and Sydney Hovde totaled 20 rebounds to lead the host Cardinals (13-7, 4-4 Northwest Athletic Conference) past the Timberwolves (1-18, 0-8).

Ronnie Harris added 21 points for the Cardinals. NIC’s Cierra Dvorak scored 15, hitting 6 of 6 from the line to guide a 22-for-28 effort.

CC Spokane 77, Wenatchee Valley 57: Jessica Olson hit 5 of 11 3-pointers on the way to a game-high 27 points, carrying the Sasquatch (12-7, 3-5 NWAC) past the Knights (12-9, 3-5) at SCC.

Shania Graham and Rose Mongoyak added 14 points apiece for CCS. Shaye Swannack added 13 points and a game-high six assists.

Men’s basketball

North Idaho 72, Blue Mountain 54: Charles Williams scored a game-high 15 points and Tyler Brimhall had 11 rebounds to guide a 46-26 advantage to lead the host Cardinals (16-5, 5-3 NWAC) past the Timberwolves (3-15, 0-8).

Jarod Greene added 14 points for NIC and Seth Christiaens came off the bench to score 11. RayQuan Evans added eight rebounds and a game-best five assists.

NIC won its third consecutive game to move into second place in the East Region, one game behind Walla Walla.

Wenatchee Valley 84, CC Spokane 77: Justin Martin and Connor Dowdy scored 20 points apiece to carry the visiting Knights (12-8, 5-3 NWAC) past the Sasquatch (15-6, 5-3) at SCC.

The Sasquatch shot 5 of 32 on 3-pointers, including 1 for 15 in the second half.

CCS’ Cesar Sandoval scored 31 points, hitting 14 of 23 from the field, and also led all players with 15 rebounds. George Pilimai added 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Sasquatch.

Softball

La Verne 1-3, Whitworth 0-4: Natalie Edlin’s sacrifice fly to right field capped a two-run eighth inning to help the Pirates (2-2) avoid a sweep against the Leopards (1-2) in nonconference play in La Verne, California.

Whitworth’s Madelyn Carlson (2-0) pitched all eight innings for the win, allowing seven hits and two earned runs. Kinsey McNaught hit a two-run homer in the third to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead.

Carly Condon’s solo homer to center in the fifth gave the Leopards the win in the opener. Whitworth’s Ashley Trueblood (0-1) allowed four hits.

Track and field

Gonzaga’s Scott Kopczynski ran the second-fastest men’s mile time in program history, finishing in 4 minutes, 6.56 seconds during the second day of the UW Invitational indoor meet in Seattle.

Washington State’s Devon Bortfeld placed runner-up in the women’s mile, finishing in 4:50.96, a personal record and the fifth-best time in program history.

Eastern Washington’s Keshun McGee placed second in the men’s triple jump with a personal-best 51 feet, 4 1/2 inches, best in the Big Sky Conference this season and No. 2 on the Eagles’ all-time list.

  • WSU’s Brock Eager won the men’s 35-pound weight throw with a season-best 66-5 1/4 at the New Mexico Team Invitational in Albuquerque.
