Prep track and field notebook: Path to state begins this week for area athletes

The path to state begins in Idaho and Washington this week.

Greater Spokane League teams gather Thursday and Friday at Spokane Falls Community College.

The meet begins Thursday at 3 p.m. and resumes Friday at 4:30.

The top nine placers in 4A and the top eight placers in 3A advance to district against Mid-Columbia Conference teams. District is May 18-19, also at SFCC. The top three placers in 4A and the top three placers in 3A move on to state.

  • Great Northern League teams gather for the District 7 meet Friday at Cheney. The meet begins at 3:30. The top three placers advance to regionals the following week against Central Washington Athletic Conference teams at Ephrata. The top four at regionals qualify for state.
  • In Idaho, state berths will be decided for all classifications. The 5A and 4A Region I meets begin Thursday at Coeur d’Alene High at 2 and conclude Friday at Vollmer Bowl in Lewiston at 3. In 5A, the top three individuals and winning relay qualify for state. In 4A, the top two individuals and winning relay advance to state. The 3A District I meet is Thursday and Friday at Timberlake High School. Action begins at 4 both days. The top three individuals and top two relays move on to state. The 2A District I-II and 1A District I-II meets are Friday at 1 and Saturday 10 at Lapwai High School. In 2A, the top two individuals and winning relay advance to state. In 1A, the top five individuals and top two relays qualify for state.

Final standings

The Mead boys secured the GSL title and the Lewis and Clark and Central Valley girls finished as co-champs as dual meets concluded last week.

In the Great Northern League, the Cheney boys and girls finished undefeated.

In the Northeast A, the Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) boys and girls finished undefeated.
