Cougars rout Huskies to avoid sweep
Andres Alvarez had three hits and drove in three runs and Tyson Guerrero and Garrett Gouldsmith hit home runs as the Cougars (9-33-1, 2-18-1) picked up their second Pac-12 Conference win and avoided a three-game sweep by beating the Huskies 13-2 on Sunday in Pullman.
Davis Bailey (2-2) picked up the win with 4 2/3 innings of relief of starter Brandon White. Bailey gave up one run on four hits, striking out six and issuing no walks. White pitched the first 4 1/3 innings. He surrendered one run on three hits and three walks, striking out three.
The Cougars turned a 3-1 lead into a 10-run lead with an eight-run fifth inning. Alvarez doubled in the first run and capped the rally with an RBI single as the Cougs batted around.
Josh Burgmann (3-5) took the loss for the Huskies (23-19, 9-12). He allowed five runs, four earned, on seven hits, striking out seven.
WSU travels to Spokane to play the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Monday at 6 p.m. at the Patterson Baseball Complex. The game will be televised on SWX.
