Squirrels, a type of rodent, are closely related to mountain beavers and dormouse. There are more than 200 species of squirrels, and they live on every continent except Antarctica and Australia.

The word squirrel comes from the Latin word scirurus, which itself comes from a Greek word meaning “shadow-tailed.”
