Kootenai County releases guide to conservation easements

Staff and wire reports

Kootenai County’s Planning and Zoning Commission has released an informative guide to help county landowners determine if a conservation easement is right for their property. The informational piece was developed to fulfill goals and policies from the county’s 2020 Comprehensive Plan Update aiming to protect and enhance the county’s natural resources.

A conservation easement is a voluntary, legally binding agreement between a landowner and a qualified conservation organization. When a conservation easement is granted, future development is restricted to protect resources and traditional uses, such as farming and forestry.

Landowners who want to keep their land intact as a family legacy or to benefit future generations of Kootenai County residents may want to consider a conservation easement. Granting a conservation easement has substantial tax benefits and guarantees the land’s continued existence as open space.
