Pedestrian killed in downtown Spokane by suspected intoxicated driver
A man was hit and killed by a car Wednesday night in downtown Spokane, and the driver was later arrested for vehicular homicide.
Spokane Police Downtown Neighborhood Resource Officers were on patrol just before 8 p.m. when they saw the aftermath of a collision at West Third Avenue and South Howard Street, according to a news release by the police department.
A vehicle had hit a pedestrian, leaving the victim trapped underneath the car, police said. Spokane fire and AMR arrived and continued life-saving efforts while attempting to free the victim.
The man was pronounced dead on scene.
Traffic Unit and Major Crimes Unit investigators found enough preliminary information to arrest the vehicle’s driver, David Macinnes, 50.
Police established probable cause that Macinnes was intoxicated at the time of the accident and arrested him for vehicular homicide.
Macinnes has a criminal record. Most recently, he plead guilty to possession of a controlled substance in 2006.
Investigators said they haven’t determine the specific dynamics of the collision and the crash is still under examination.
Editor’s Note: The headline on this story has been updated to reflect more generally that Macinnes was intoxicated rather than specifically indicate the intoxicant.
